for supper earth
it's a military comedy. what did you expect?
in HELLDIVERS 2, which takes place about 100 years after the events of HELLDIVERS (1) and the first Galactic War, you fight as one of SEAF's "elite" soldiers in the Second Galactic War.
Super Earth is at war with 3 factions:
| The Automatons: | The Terminids: | The Illuminate: |
|---|---|---|
| AKA Bots. Created by the Cyborgs before the events of HD2, they are fully sentient robots capable of weilding fusion weapons, rockets, and melee weapons. | AKA Bugs. Unlike the bots, Terminids are usually incapable of complex thought. They reproduce with spores and tend to swarm, and they can spit or even launch Acid/Bile at you. However... they're highly flamable :) | AKA Squids. They, much like the Automatons, are a developed species. They have highly advanced technology and almost went extinct after GW1. |
| Super Earth did NOT originally attack the automotons. However, Super Earth DID directly attack their creators, the Cyborgs, after a bombing that took place in the first game | Super Earth used to harvest the Terminid species for E710 (oil). Terminids produce it when their bodies decompose. | Super Earth orignally attacked the Iluminate under suspicion of holding weapons of mass destruction. They were thought to be extinct after GW1. They come back and make a direct attack on Super Earth in GW2. |
it gets chaotic. fast. but that's half the fun! pull in a squad of 4 and watch everybody die from one guy's missed 500kg
you spawn in with a loadout of your choosing, however, the weapons you can put in your spawn loadout are always much lower caliber than what you can get from STRATAGEMS. Stratagems are items, bombs, payloads, more helldivers, just about anything you can think of, put in a hellpod and sent down from the Super Destroyer. Anything from a literal nuclear bomb to a gun that can vaporize stuff in less than a second to a car. The con is that you can't spawn with them and they're either on cooldown, there's a restock period, or you have a limited number of them. You can only prepare 4 stratagems to use in mission, so you have to pick wisely between specialty weapons, vehicles, towers, and aerial attacks.
you have to type in a code using WASD or other directional input device of some kind and during that time (UNLESS YOU ARE ON CONSOLE) you cannot move, so while it may seem like stratagems are an end all be all, you do actually have to play your cards wisely, or else you'll get yourself into hot waters
speaking of.... what happens when you DO inevetably get yourself into hot waters? what if you die? fear not, for you have 10+ other helldivers ready to be unfrozen and launched down to the battleground at any time.. (this is how the game explains respawning in universe). yes, you are canon fodder
a single mission usually lasts 40 mins, though you do not have to use all of your time and if you run out of time, the extraction shuttle gets called automatically and you loose access to reinformcents (you cannot revive) and stratagems (You keep any weapon stratagems you already called). although, defense and blitz missions actually last about 12 to 15 mins.
